Can your signature inspire a nation?

What is the difference between a signature and an autograph?

Signatures sign,while autographs inspire.

William Shakespeare put his pants on one leg at a time, but his signature is worth a reported $3 million dollars, if ever sold.  This is due to scarcity as well, but man that is some power.

The autograph is a prized possession for children around the world and a source of inspiration for many.  I was inspired by a Darren Puppa autograph for at least 4 years growing up which read ‘Dear Ryan, Keep playing hockey and don’t give up!’ Man, that thing had some serious legs for me.

When you were a child (or maybe even now) I’m sure you experienced the power of an autograph.  You remember the feeling of meeting your sporting idol as he takes your item, asks your name, and signs his John Hancock for all of eternity.  Celebrity autographs can certainly inspire.

So what if your signature could inspire a nation?

In South Africa, YOUR autograph has the power to inspire, thanks to an effort by Adidas and South Africa.  The two teamed together to create the world’s largest soccer jersey, measuring at 60mx48m (196ft x 157ft) which will travel around South Africa from host city to host city and points in between.

The reason for the jersey.  You sign it. You endorse the jersey with your mark and show your support for a nation that is preparing to host the biggest sporting event in the world.

The jersey is traveling around South Africa from host city to host city and points in between.  You can sign the jersey in person, on-line, in a store, or on your mobile phone.  At the end of may it will arrive in time for the kickoff of the 2010 World Cup.

In South Africa, your signature is now a symbol of support for your country.  Everyone that signs the jersey is on a level playing field, from ‘VIP’s to a taxi driver in Kimberely’ as the video puts it.

What a great way to promote community and support for your nation.  It does not matter that 57% of South Africans live below the poverty line.  On this jersey, all the names are equal and there for one reason, to support South Africa.

Ryan This is a wonderful post. Confess I'm biased because the Bard features right up front! Sometimes simple ideas telescope our thoughts so much further. You made me think about the signature I want to leave in the hearts of people I love and admire, and even those who may not like me. Its powerful to have that distance to think about ourselves and more importantly, what I want to do. Provocateur, thank you! Anita Lobo

Hi Anita, Thanks for the post. I'm glad you enjoyed the reference! When you think of the concept behind it, all you needed to do to support was sign your name, or I'm sure if you were even illiterate, a picture would have sufficed. But it is with that signature multiplied by 100000 that would help to inspire a nation. No $$ needed. Even watching that video I get goosebumps thinking about the power of it. So I can't imagine what a South African feels!
