a photo a day : 7/365 | icicles galore

by Ryan on January 8, 2010

Every time I see an icicle I immediately think of ‘A Christmas Story’ when Ralphie tells the story of an icicle falling on his glasses when he shot his eye out.

‘Those things have been known to kill people.” -Ralphie’s mom

As kids we used to break off icicles from the roofs and eat them like they were little freeze pops.  I’m glad I ingested some high quality roof water as a child, but they say kids don’t eat enough dirt these days, right?

Winter reminds me of going outside and playing pond hockey with my father at Ives Pond, even though he was terrible at skating.  Memories of building monster snow igloos and funny-fumbles are interchanged with sledding and the occasional snowballing of someone’s house.

Our apartment complex gets some amazing icicles during the course of the winter, and our storm the past few days did not disappoint.  It’s a miracle our gutters are still attached to the roof.

I needed to take a night shot, so I did some background reading on a few articles to help me get my bearings, and went for it.  I love trying to fiddle with the angle too, and this just seemed fun.

I hope the gutters stay on after the winter...

What does winter remind you of?

PS. You can find some stunning examples of night shots here.

Those are some insane icicles! And I thought some of the ones we saw here in Lubbock, TX were big! Haha! :)

Wow, that’s impressive!

I’ve seen them for the first in my life these days here in Germany, but they are way smaller than yours :)
