Last week I had the opportunity to head down to Springfield, Missouri to speak at two separate events at Missouri State University; a Management class for good friend Dr. Ben Goss and a social media focused #PRSSADay with Missouri State PRSSA.

Dr. Goss asked me to simply talk about my experiences and how I got to where I am today. With that guidance, I focused on value and how students need to increase their value to be competitive and to succeed in today’s world.

I was surprised at the trepidation during the discussion of social media and the fear that lies behind those who are afraid of using it wrong. I simply encouraged the students to go out there and try and to help increase the value they will bring to the table when applying for jobs in the near future.

A side note: Dr. Goss’ class were responsible for coming up with questions which blew me out of the water. I hope to get a list of unanswered questions and tackle them here on the blog in due time.

On Friday, I was invited to speak at #PRSSADay and talk about “The value of social media” I simply want to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to present Do. I was lucky to be in great company with Tressa Robbins from BurrellesLuce who talked about seven myths about social media and a panel of guests from Social Media Club Springfield. who gave great advice in a free flowing Q&A and discussion on the various social media platforms and their best practices.

The event was extremely well run by the PRSSA folks. Good schedule, food, location and guests. Everyone in the crowd was engaged in the talks and thinking critically about the information being discussed. There were very few softball questions and a few even played devils advocate, which I loved.

Any time I can relate LEGOS and social media AND be understood is a great day.

I wanted highlight my friends who I mentioned in the talk that are doing great things in social media. You can check out more about Jenny Blake (make sure to buy her book and check out her blog) and Kristin Adams who is doing so much kickass stuff she doesn’t even have time to blog! Please connect with them on twitter!

I’m glad I got to know so many of you during the event and I hope that you stay in touch. If I can help with anything, please let me know. Hopefully I can come back next year and learn from you again!

Now, go out there and DO!

Ryan -

It was great to meet you at #PRSSADay at Missouri State. Your presentation was very insightful, reminding students that social media participation doesn't have to be perfect (go DO). You don't have to be a master of the space to participate. Just do it. I use that same philosophy. Anytime someone asks me how to get followers on Twitter, blog readers and subscribers, etc., I always ask them "what is it that you want to accomplish?" Do you want to build your brand? Market yourself? Get a job? Each person uses a different approach and what works for one won't work for another. That's the beauty of media.

Keep up the great work. If you're interested, check out my blog, Campus to Career (www.campus-to-career.com). It's a free blog for job seekers on the search, social media, mentorship, leadership and more. I'd love to know what you think.

Thanks again for presenting. I know that the Springfield Social Media Club and Missouri State PRSSA enjoyed it!

kbaumann Hi Kirk! Great to hear from you and thanks for the comment. So many people are focused on gaining followers right away that they forget to figure out how the whole scene works. I'll be sure to give your site a look and let you know what I think! It was great to meet you last week and hopefully we can stay in touch and meet up next time I'm down in Springfield!
